RI picks up three more bronze medals in karate

Indonesian karate athletes secured three more bronze medals in four categories Sunday at the 2011 Asia Karate Championship in Quanzhou, China.

The three medals add to a tally of two other medals.

Flenty Meyti Laurence Enoch won bronze in the women’s single kata, Yulianty Syafrudin, Dewi Prasetya and Sisilia Agustiani Ora won bronze in the women’s group kata and Azwar, Fidelis Lolobua and Faisal Zainuddin won bronze in the men’s group kata, news portal kompas.com reported.

Flenty defeated Taiwan’s Yeh Hsiang-Ling 4-1 but lost to Vitenam’s Do Thi Thu Ha 2-3.

In the men’s single kata, Faisal Zainuddin was beaten by Japan’s Issei Shimbaba.

The Indonesian women’s group kata team outclassed Malaysia 4-1, but fell to Japan 5-0.

Indonesia’s men’s group kata team defeated Hong Kong, Malaysia and Iran, but once again succumbed in the semifinal to Japan.

Indonesia on Friday had already secured two bronze medals in the kumite category through Yulanda Asmuruf and Hendro Salim.

As of the time of this report, the men’s group kumite and the women’s group kumite events were still ongoing. (rpt)
