Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutors on Tuesday requested a panel of judges to hand down a five-year jail term to suspended North Sumatra Governor Syamsul Arifin over charges of graft he allegedly committed during his tenure as Langkat regent in North Sumatra, from 2000 to 2007.
In the sentence demand read out at the Corruption Court, prosecutors said that Syamsul had been proven to have embezzled money from the Langkat regency annual budget to the tune of Rp 98.7 billion (US$11.55 million).
“He abused his power for his own benefit and for the benefit of others,” prosecutor Muhibuddin told the court.
“Therefore, we demand the court sentence him to five years in prison.”
The KPK has had Syamsul in detention since October last year. KPK investigators have also seized his assets, including a Jaguar sports car and a piece of property at the Raffles Hills housing complex in Cibubur, Jakarta.
