House of Representatives Speaker Marzuki Alie is defending his statement that the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has failed and should be disbanded.
“I see that current efforts have yet to produce results, while corruption continues to spread across the country,” Marzuki said as quoted by tribunnews.com on Sunday.
“I have a different solution.”
Marzuki said on Friday that corrupters could be forgiven if they returned their ill-gotten booty to the state.
The statement drew protests from legislators, lawyers and others, who agreed that the KPK was still needed.
The commission, the latest in a series of institutions created to tackle graft, has a better popular reputation than the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) or the National Police.
