Magnitude-6 quake hits W. Sumatra, Bengkulu
A magnitude-6 earthquake shook the West Sumatra capital of Padang, and Mukomuko in the neighboring province of Bengkulu, at around 7 a.m. on Thursday, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) says.
The epicenter of the quake was 37 kilometers southwest of Mukomuko, at a depth of 28 kilometers below sea level, an official from the BMKG Padangpanjang office, Sutri, said Thursday as quoted by Antara state news wire.
The earthquake did not trigger a tsunami, the agency said.
There were no reports of damage or injuries from the quake, but it caused a panic in Padang, where residents were seen fleeing their homes, shouting “Earthquake!”
The quake was also felt across West Sumatra, including in regions bordering with Jambi.
The agency also reported that a magnitude-5.5 quake hit Padang Sidempuan in North Sumatra at around 3 a.m. the same day.
Earlier on Wednesday, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) increased the warning level for the Mt. Marapi volcano in Agam and Tanah Datar, North Sumatra, from “Normal Active” (level 1) to "Alert" (level 2), kompas.com reported.
