An HIV/AIDS activist from Rumah Cemara Bandung, Derajat Ginanjar, is fulfilling his promise to walk from Bandung to Jakarta as the NGO’s soccer team has earned the chance to participate at the upcoming Homeless World Cup, which is set on Aug. 21 to 28 in France.
Derajat started his journey from Bandung on Saturday morning and is expected to reach Jakarta on Wednesday, Kompas.com reported.
West Java AIDS Eradication Commission (KPAD) spokesman Tri Irwanda said that soccer had been a venue for Rumah Cemara to promote awareness of the disease since 2009.
The Homeless World Cup is an international soccer tournament for homeless and marginalized people such as drug users and people with HIV/AIDS.
International soccer players such as Rio Ferdinand and Didier Drogba are participating in the campaign as ambassadors. (rpt)
