Sri Mulyati, the wife of a becak driver in Cirebon, said she was told to pay Rp 2 million (US$236) to bribe a prosecutor for her husband’s freedom over petty theft charges.
She is asking for the money back because the prosecutor did not fulfill his promise.
“After receiving the money, the prosecutor never showed up at the trial. The hardest part is knowing that my husband, Hasan, is still being punished by the judges,” Mulyati said on Wednesday as quoted by tribunnews.com.
She said the prosecutor, identified only as NS, had not contacted her since the end of her husband’s trial.
Hasan had also reportedly been caught in the act of stealing two bags and a toy from a toy store at a shopping mall in Cirebon last April. Nani, the owner of the store, showed leniency by asking prosecutors to stop the case, but the prosecutors did not listen to her and the case continued.
