Chaerul Huda, a legal expert from Muhammadiyah University in Jakarta, said Nazaruddin can be tried in absentia as legal institutions had not yet been able to bring him back to Indonesia.
“As Nazaruddin cannot be summoned to the trial, he can be tried in absentia,” he said on Sunday, as quoted by kompas.com.
Chaerul said the anticorruption law, No. 20/2001, accommodated such a trial in absentia.
“Other requirements for the trial are evidence,” he added.
Previously, National Police chief detective Insp. Gen. Sutarman said police have had difficulties capturing Nazaruddin because he used an original passport with a fake identity. (aaa)
