iPad sellers defend their actions as industry norm

The Central Jakarta District Court on Tuesday continues to hear the trial of Randy Lester Samu and Dian Yudha Negara, who face charges of illegally selling Apple iPad tablet computers without providing Indonesian manuals.

Dian said even authorized iPad sellers did not sell the product with Indonesian manuals.

"I have checked with authorized Apple product resellers and found that officially they do not provide any manuals for iPads in Indonesian," he said.

He claimed manuals could only obtained through downloads from Apple's website. However manuals were only available for products such as the Macbook Pro, iMac, iPod nano, iPod touch and iPhone.

Randy and Dian were arrested in November last year in a sting by undercover police officers purporting to buy eight iPads via an internet forum.

Both were arrested for violating the 1999 Consumer Protection Law requiring vendors to provide an Indonesian manual for electronic devices. (rpt)
