In efforts to reduce traffic accidents during the upcoming Idul Fitri exodus, Jakarta Police has asked state-owned railway operator PT KAI to provide special carriages for motorcycles.
“We expect this year around 4.1 million motorcycles will be used to transport around 8.3 million travellers, an increase from last year’s 3.6 million motorcycles used by 7.2 million travelers.
"Providing special carriages for motorcycles would be very helpful for travelers,” Jakarta Police’s traffic division Sr. Comr. Royke Lumowa said Thursday as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
However, PT KAI spokesman Mateta Rizalulhaq said the company had introduced this strategy last year, but less people had used the service than expected.
“Last year, we provided eight special carriages for motorcycles, each with room for 50 motorcycles. But these were only 20 percent occupied. We decided to abandon that strategy this year,” he said.
