RI set to grow fastest since 1998 crisis despite global woes: SBY

The recent jitters in the global economy will affect Indonesia, but it is still set to grow at the fastest it has since the 1998 crisis, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono says.

“Amid uncertainty in global economic developments, our economy is expected to grow 6.5 percent this year. This growth, which is the fastest we have seen since the 1998 crisis, is supported by investment, exports and domestic consumption,” Yudhoyono said during his annual economic speech presented before legislators.

In terms of production, he added, Indonesia's economic growth this year would be driven by the sectors of manufacturing industry, agriculture and mining.

Yudhoyono pointed out risks that could hinder the country from achieving its goal, namely the European financial crisis, the Untied States fiscal crisis and China and India’s overheating and inflationary pressures — all of which would result in slowing global economic growth.

“These conditions could affect our country’s economy,” he said. “All of these need to be avoided and anticipated so that they do not disrupt our country’s economic growth.”
