Constitutional Court to select new chief

The Constitutional Court (MK) is scheduled to vote for a new chief justice today, as incumbent chief justice Mahfud MD faces the end of his tenure by the end of this month, tribunnews.com reported on Thursday

The election is set to commence at 2 p.m., with all nine of the court's judges having the same chance at being appointed to the top post.

It is expected that the court will have installed its new chief by early September.

Many observers have suggested that Mahfud, a law professor from the Indonesian Islamic University and a former legislator from the National Awakening Party, should continue to lead the court after favorable outcomes in several cases gained him notoriety as one of the few officials with integrity.
