AKARTA: The Japanese government symbolically handed over aid worth more than ¥2 billion (US$26.11 million) to the Transportation Ministry on Tuesday.
The aid, aimed at enhancing Indonesia’s vessel traffic and port security systems, included equipment for a project to enhance vessel traffic systems in the Malacca and Singapore Straits worth ¥1.57 billion and for a project to improve port security systems worth ¥545 million.
Transportation Ministry sea transportation director general Leon Muhamad said that the equipment, including CCTV camera monitoring systems, X-ray inspection systems and a walk-through type metal detector, would be installed in eight ports that border with neighboring countries, including Belawan, Dumai, Tanjung Pinang, Pontianak and Benoa ports.
“We will focus on luggage entering ports. All of it will be monitored to make sure that it is all clear and secure,” Leon said after the ceremony, adding the implementation would require additional funds from the state budget.
