The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in its annual circular warns all public officials against accepting gifts during the Idul Fitri holiday period, since it could endanger efforts to eradicate graft.
“Every public official who receives gifts in the form of parcels, vouchers, discount cards and food should hand them over to KPK within the first 30 days after receiving them. The KPK will then decide whether the gifts should be handed back or confiscated by the state for reasons of integrity,” the circular states as quoted by kompas.com.
The commission also warns the public not to treat public officials with excessive amounts of respect, including by congratulating them with advertisements in the media.
“It would be better for this money to go to those who are in dire need instead,” the KPK said.
The law on corruption has strict guidelines for public officials in regards to reporting every gift they receive related to with their official position. A failure to do so could warrant them being charged with receiving gratification or bribes.
