As the regime of Muammar Qaddafi collapses, the Indonesian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it hoped the violence afflicting the Libyan people would soon end, and the nation would transition to a democracy.

“The Indonesian government lends its support and lauds the choice that the Libyan people have made, because they know what is best for their nation its future,” Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa in a press release sent to The Jakarta Post on Monday.

The ministry also hoped that the transition in Libya would give more protection to the Libyan people and prevent the people from becoming victims of violence that might arise. It also expected that any new government assuming power would give its people the chance to determine their own future.

Indonesia also urges the United Nations to play a role in ensuring the best options are provided to the Libyan people, it said.(rpt)
