Letter: Training programs will reduce poverty

A- A A+

Poverty is one of the most serious problems in Indonesia. It is actually somewhat funny given that Indonesia is a rich country in terms of its natural resources. Is it due to corruption which is rampant in this country?

Let us forget about the causes of the increasing number of poor people. A proverb says, “In life, never spend more than 10 percent of your time on the problem and spend at least 90 percent of your time on the solution.”

An article in The Jakarta Post on August 20 titled “Training program helps poor, illiterate women find jobs” is something interesting to look at.

I’m so glad knowing that there is a foundation conducting such a good program. I think the training program is one of the best solutions that our government can do to help its poor citizens prepare themselves in life.

It is stated in the article that ROLE Foundation provides poor and illiterate women to study work and life skills such as English and computer skills. Most of us will agree that mastering English and computers is a must nowadays because it can give additional value when seeking jobs.

Those living under poverty should not be sad because you still have a long journey to change your life. Kadek Emiarti and Eli Herawati are two examples of poor people who can change their life by taking part in the training program.

I think the government should provide more work and life skill training programs throughout Indonesia so that those who do not have titles can still get a good job and improve their life.
