Dozens of armed police officers are patrolling Gambir train station in Central Jakarta after a group of assailants, including a marine, tried to hijack a train bound for East Java yesterday.

“We are here to ensure everyone’s safety,” Wawan, one of the police officers, said on Sunday as quoted by tribunnews.com.

Cheril, a passenger waiting to board a train, said the officers' presence was a comfort as she knew where to run if anything happened.

More than 3,000 people are currently waiting at Gambir to board trains bound for 20 cities throughout Java Island. More than 3 million people have been estimated to have returned home to celebrate Idul Fitri.
