Authorities reported that at least 378 people had died in traffic accidents as of Tuesday evening during the Idul Fitri holiday exodus.

The accidents also caused more than 630 severe injuries. At least 1,615 others suffered light injuries.

The National Command Post for Idul Fitri, managed by the Transportation Ministry, reported 238 traffic accidents on Tuesday alone, when 33 people lost their lives, kompas.com reported on Wednesday.

Most accidents were reportedly caused by sleepy drivers (67 percent). The remainder were blamed on driving under the influence of alcohol and carelessness, including using cell phones while driving.
