A pregnant woman died on the Amukti Palapa ship taking her from Kangean Island, East Java, to Sumenep, Madura.
The woman, Haira Ummah, was reportedly in the way to a hospital in Sumenep to undergo an operation to take out a dead fetus in her womb.
Bambang Supriyo, the operational manager of PT Sumekar that runs the ship, said that Haira died on Friday at 10:30 pm.
“The ship was in Raas waters [East Java] when she died,” Bambang said Saturday as quoted by kompas.com.
Bambang said that the ship left Kangean Island at 7 p.m.
“We are in a process of writing a report on her death,” he said, “The mother’s condition had been critical before she boarded the ship. She was accompanied by medical offers from a local community health clinic.”
Bambang explained that the ship’s captain had asked for a testimonial letter on Haira’s condition before she was permitted to come aboard.
“The captain decided to take her on the ship with the consideration that she [Haira] would be able to survive until the hospital in Sumenep,” he said.
