Fires swept across densely populated areas in Pasar Ikan, Penjaringan, North Jakarta on Friday afternoon.

Penjaringan subdistrict head Ali Mudasyir was quoted by kompas.com as saying that the fires affected 125 homes in the neighborhood unit (RT) 12 with 225 families of 1,556 residents, and 50 homes in the RT 01 with 75 families of 250 residents.

The fire was allegedly came from a house at the RT 12.

North Jakarta Fire Department deployed 34 fire trucks to extinguish the inferno. Their efforts, however, were apparently complicated by the dense proximity of homes in the area.

Witnesses reported that the fires spread to the area of a nearby traditional market.

No immediate information is available on the number of injuries or fatalities in the blaze.
