Indonesia's central bank, Bank Indonesia (BI), and the National Police destroyed 367,049 units of counterfeit money worth Rp 24 billion (approximately US$2.8 million) on Tuesday.
The counterfeit money was composed of Rp 1,000, 12 sheets of Rp 2,000, 5,295 sheets of Rp 5,000, 19,505 sheets of Rp 10,000, 27,012 sheets of Rp 20,000, 162,997 sheets of Rp 50,000 and 152,228 sheets of Rp 100,000.
The director of economic and specific crimes directorate at the National Police, Brig. Gen. Arief Sulistyanto, said that the counterfeit money was evidence collected from 2003 to 2010, following up of reports from banks nationwide and the citizens.
“We need to destroy the fake money to ensure that it does not circulate,” Arief said during a press conference at the BI office on Tuesday.
The abolishment of the fake money is the first, after the South Jakarta District Court issued a ruling on counterfeit money abolishment on July 18 this year. BI carries out the abolishment because it has the technology to destroy it.
Eko Yulianto, the head of planning and research bureau of money improvement at BI, said that BI had performed classification procedures to determine the method used to make the money.
“We found that the most-used method to construct money was using a photocopy machine. About 79.9 percent out of the fake money collected was made using this method. The next frequently-used method is with a laser, about 19 percent of the money collected was made this way,” Eko said. (rcf)
