More than 50,000 people in Palembang mayoralty and Banyu Asin regency in South Sumatra faced blackouts that lasted more than 14 hours on Thursday as a result of repairs to Talang Kelapa substation.

The management of PT PLN for South Sumatra, Jambi and Bengkulu said the repairs were part of preparations for the upcoming 2011 SEA Games XXVI in Palembang.

PLN general manager Nandi Ranadireksa expressed fears that there may be more blackouts after the company encountered several unexpected technical problems at the facility.

“I’m sorry for the inconvenience,” Nandi was saying as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.on Friday

Local PLN spokesman Slamet DS said beside the technical glitches, heavy rains on Thursday night had also hampered the repairs.
