Stopping remission for corruptors is no human rights breach: Minister

A- A A+

Law and Human Rights Minister Patrialis Akbar said that an end to granting sentence remission for corruption convicts is not a violation of human rights.

“As long as the legal basis is clear and strong, of course it doesn’t violate human rights,” he said on Friday as quoted by tribunnews.com.

Patrialis said that he had formed a team to study and weigh up the pros and cons of implementing the policy.

Presidential aide for legal affairs Denny Indrayana said on Thursday that the President had agreed on the cut in granting sentence remission for convicts of organized crime such as terrorism and corruption.

Denny said the policy was in line with the President’s commitment to eliminate corruption.
