AntaraCompanies in Jakarta are required to provide transportation services for female employees working outside normal working hours, an official says.
“Companies must provide vehicles to pick up and escort female employees working at night; it’s in the regulation,” Jakarta Manpower and Transmigration Agency head Deded Sukendar said on Saturday in Jakarta.
He specified outside normal work hours as being between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m.
Deded made the statement in response to a recent gang rape case involving a woman taking a public minivan home from her office at night.
He stopped short at naming the bylaw, but said it was based on the 2003 Labor Law.
Deded said female employees’ services were still needed in a number of fields, such as in airports, hospitals and cinemas, thus the pickup services were mandatory.
He added that companies were also obliged to provide social insurance for female employees experiencing sexual abuse, kompas.com reported.
