Maluku's police chief and Pattimura Military commander visited security personnel in Ambon on Saturday, to support troops sent to the city after last week's riot.

“Our presence is to boost the morale of all officers. They have been working hard in seven days after the rioting. They must be exhausted," Maluku Police chief Brig. Gen. Syarief Gunawan said on Saturday as quoted by kompas.com.

Syarief, who was accompanied by Army Maj. Gen. Sumarsono, told the soldiers and police officers that they should protect the people.

The generals visited security posts in the Trikora monument area, on Jl. Dr Latumenten and Jl. Dr Malaiholo, and in the Waringin and Batu Merah area.

Seven were killed and 65 injured in riots in Ambon on Sunday after text message rumors spread that a Muslim man killed in a road accident had been tortured and killed by Christians.

Ambon was swept by Muslim-Christian conflict between 1999 and 2002, when thousands were killed and hundreds of thousands displaced throughout the Maluku Islands.
