More than 1,000 volunteers came to Babakan Siliwangi park on Sunday to clear up garbage littering the city park, which is located in the heart of Bandung, West Java. The event, which was organized through micro blogging site Twitter, is part of preparations for the Tunza International Children and Youth Conference, which is due to be held in the city from Sept. 27 - Oct. 1.

"More than 1,000 participants are scheduled to replant the area, which previously had asphalt streets," one of event's initiators, Ridwan Kamil, said on Sunday as quoted by kompas.com.

Ridwan said that the volunteers came from different backgrounds, ranging from students to professionals.

Ridwan added that he, along with Bandung's Creative City Forum, invited those interested to clean up the 3.8 square kilometers site.

"I invited people [to join the cause] via Twitter. Nowadays, it's much easier to communicate through social networks," said Ridwan.

Ridwan, who operates Twitter account @ridwankamil, which has more than 16,000 followers, often discusses various issues, including public spaces.

Ridwan has proved that social mobilization can be carried out in a cheap, efficient yet easy way.

The newly replanted site will be officially opened as the country's first city forest on Sept. 27 to coincide with the first day of the conference.
