Members of Publish What You Pay, a coalition urging the government to implement the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) to boost transparency in the energy sector, said that the government should follow suit with the US, which has just decided to implement the initiative.
US President Barack Obama announced on Tuesday that the government will adopt the initiative to increase transparency in the oil, gas and mining sectors.
"This is an important step for the EITI," Ridaya Laodengkowe, the coalition's coordinator, said on Wednesday.
He added that the risk status of investing in Indonesia would "worsen" if Indonesia continues to fail as a compliant country.
"We are counting on the renewal of the Indonesian government's commitment to the EITI by speeding up the implementation of the initiative in Indonesia," he told The Jakarta Post.
