Former governor Sutiyoso laments city's decision on monorail

Former Jakarta governor Sutiyoso says he is dismayed to see his dreams of a monorail system on the verge of being snuffed out, as the current administration plans to annul its construction.

“I am saddened to hear that the monorail construction will be stopped,” he said on Thursday as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.

The city administration saw financial obstacles in completing the construction of the monorail, which was first brought up and designed during Sutiyoso’s administration.

Sutiyoso said that financial hurdles were something that could be handled with a little consistency.

“Just be consistent. There will always be hurdles. I found it difficult developing the [Transjakarta] busway back then,” he said.

He urged the administration to at least complete one of the monorail corridors, which he said was not a tall order.

“If 10 banks invested on it, each contributing Rp 300 billion (US$ 33.3 million), it could be done,” he said.
