The National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) revealed on Friday that 91,311 cases of sexual violence against women were reported during the 1998-2011 period.
Commissioner Andy Yentriyani added that "28 women become victims of sexual violence everyday" based on data compiled annually by the commission since 2000.
Sexual harassment, she added, accounted for one-third of a total of 295,836 cases of violence against women that the commission recorded.
Most of the sexual vioence took place in the personal domain.
“The perpetrators are mostly family members or boyfriends,” another commissioner Neng Dara Affiah said.
There are also cases where the perpetrators are public officials who harassed junior members of staff.
The most recent case was an official at the National Land Agency (BPN) who reportedly abused three of his subordinates.
Neng Dara hoped law enforcers would impose sterner sanctions on sex criminals.
