Mounds of trash clog Ciliwung River

A- A A+

Garbage was seen covering part of the river water under the Panus Bridge at Ciliwung water monitoring station in Depok, West Java.

“We cannot possibly scoop the garbage with regular equipment. It can only be dredged with heavy gear,” station official Imih said Saturday as quoted by kompas.com.

He said that to date the rubbish had yet to obscure his vision, but if the garbage continued to accumulate he might not be able to make an accurate appraisal.

There were around 100 scouts and Depok flood task force members who tried to dredge the garbage on Saturday morning, however, because there was so much rubbish most that tried to help could only clean up on the river banks.

Depok Environment Agency head Rahmat Subagyo said the waste needed to be removed very soon because the rainy season is approaching.
