Chopper carrying 2 missing in Sumbawa
A chopper carrying two people went missing in Sumbawa, West Nusa Tenggara, while it was heading to the mine site of PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (NNT), the local unit of US mining firm Newmont Mining Corporation.
The chopper belongs to Airfast and had been rented by Newmont. It carried the pilot and a crew member, but no passengers, NNT media relations officer Ahmad Fahry said Sunday in Sumbawa.
“We don’t yet know the name of the pilot because we had rented the chopper,” Ahmad said, as quoted by metrotvnews.com.
Ahmad added that the chopper had taken off from Lenangguar district in Sumbawa in good weather conditions, but then the weather likely turned foul during the trip to Dodo forest in Ropang district, where the Newmont mining site is situated.
The authorities lost contact with the helicopter at about 1.40 p.m. on Sunday, Ahmad said.
NNT spokesman Ruby W. Purnomo said a search and rescue team, with help from a number of military officers and locals, were currently searching for the chopper.
