Legendary club Double Six bows out to condotel

S

eminyak’s legendary nightclub 66 (Double Six) threw a huge farewell party on Saturday night until
dawn Sunday to mark its final day. The club, which first opened in June 1987 and quickly became one of Bali’s most popular and well-known party venues, is giving way to a condotel, Kuta’s latest construction trend.

The club was so popular that a strip of beach in front of it and a narrow street leading to it were referred to as Double Six Beach and Jl. Double Six, respectively.

Putu Oka Sumadi, the representative of the 66 owner, said the closing of the club was driven merely by economic considerations.

“There is an increasing demand for housing and residential facilities in Kuta. This area is still a favorite place for visitors to spend their nights during their holidays in Bali. That’s why we will build a 170-unit condotel on this plot of land,” he said.

Two other nearby establishments, Bacio club and a bungy jump, will also be closed down to make way for the condotel. “The main investor of the condotel is none other than Kadek Wiranatha, the owner of 66, Bacio and the bungy jump,” Sumadi said.

To keep the memory of 66 alive, the condotel will be named 66 Suites and Residences.

In the invitation to the club’s closing party, Kadek Wiranatha recalled that the club was a meeting point for Seminyak regulars who had decided to make Bali their home, a place to meet where a lot of romance and madness happened. Eventually, Double Six became a vibrant discotheque for different shapes and colors from around the planet.
