Said Aqil Siradj, chairman of Indonesia’s largest Islamic organization Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) said the Surakarta suicide bomber had misunderstood Islamic teachings.
“The perpetrators wrongly interpreted Islam,” Aqil said Tuesday as quoted by tempointeraktif.com. “Especially if they believed they would be welcomed by angels in heaven. It is false!”
Aqil made the remark after visiting victims of the Sepenuh Injil Bethel Church (GBIS) bombing in Kepunten, Surakarta, Central Java on Sept. 25 at Dr. Oen Hospital.
He added that it would be difficult to manage suicide bombers. “They are difficult to change,” Aqil said.
He expected the young generation would not be easily influenced by misguided Islamic teachings. “Don’t be easily persuaded,” he said.
