The Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board (PBNU) has suggested that the Communications and Information Ministry close access to websites containing radical doctrines.
PBNU chairman Said Aqil Siradj said the sites had the potential to encourage extremism and radical movements that ended up in terrorism.
“Such sites exists and they are no less dangerous than porn sites. The minister should close access to such sites as well, not only sites that contain pornographic material,” Said said Tuesday as quoted by kompas.com.
He added that radical groups often made use of freedom of information to spread their doctrines.
A lack of understanding about fundamental Islamic beliefs and backwardness often led to radicalism, he said.
“I will tell the government to close access to those radical sites. We have a firm stance on this matter and we will give our full support to closing radical sites,” he said.
