T

he Russian embassy and the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Jakarta released the Textbook on Modern Russian Language in Indonesian in an official ceremony last Friday in the latest effort to introduce Russian culture here.

The book is also part of a program to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Russia and Indonesia, which was launched last year. The book project is in cooperation with Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin).

The author of the book, Veronika Novoseltseva, who is the first secretary at the embassy, was the interpreter for former Russian president Vladimir Putin and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono when Putin visited Indonesia four years ago.

“It was a unique situation. There was just one interpreter for the Russian and Indonesian language. She masters both languages terrifically,” Russian Ambassador to Indonesia Alexander A. Ivanov said.

The Modern Russian Language Textbook is the first educational book in the Indonesian language teaching the Russian language at a high level.

“With the textbook, we can expect a further strengthening interest in Russian literature such as Tolstoy and language among the people of Indonesia” Ivanov said.

Kadin chairman Suryo Bambang Sulisto said the book could provide a good opportunity for Indonesian students who want to study in Russia.

Novoseltseva was a teacher at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations before working in Jakarta eight years ago.
