At least eight people died after being trampled by panicking passengers attempting to escape a ferry that caught fire at Tanjung Perak port in Surabaya on Wednesday.
The KM Karina 9 ferry was due to leave the port, heading to Banjarmasin in Kalimantan, when the fire broke out at the bottom of the vessel at around 6 a.m.
The fire, believed to have originated from an overloaded truck on board, soon triggered a panic among passengers, who scrambled an emergency ladder attempting to escape from the ferry. 
Many elderly passengers were injured after being trampled in the struggle, in which at least eight people died, tribunnews.com reported.
