Delegates from 19 Asian nations have joined the Asian Parliamentary Assembly’s (APA) annual meeting at the Sunan Hotel in Surakarta (Solo), Central Java, on Wednesday.
The international conference, which will discuss migrant worker protection and friendship and cooperation in Asia, was opened by House of Representatives Speaker Marzuki Alie.
Marzuki said international migration and protecting migrant worker rights were among the biggest challenges faced by nations around the world.
There were 100 million migrant workers in the world in 2009 – a figure that would likely increase due to globalization, according to the International Labor Organization (ILO).
The organization also said migrant workers faced unjust treatment, ranging from low wages, inhumane treatment, physical abuse, sexual harassment to trafficking.
The assembly will be attended by APA assistant secretary General Bijan Moshirvaziri, Central Java Deputy Governor Rustriningsih and Surakarta Mayor Joko Widodo.
