Monas set to get a second bath
Experts have suggested that the National Monument (Monas) should be cleaned with hot water as the Jakarta administration is planning to bathe the monument for the second time since its construction 50 years ago.
University of Indonesia archaeologist Candrian Attahiyat said hot water molecules were enough to rinse the dirt off Monas' walls.
“A [hot] water spray would be sufficient. There is no need for detergent or other mixtures,” Candrian said Tuesday in Jakarta.
“But, don’t spray it too strongly. That could damage [Monas' walls],” he added, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
Similarly, an architect from the Indonesian Heritage Preservation Agency (BPPI), Arya Abieta, said hot water at a controlled pressure would be enough to clean Monas.
“[The hot water] can remove all the dust and fungus,” he said.
Monas was first cleaned in 1992 by a German company that specializes in the restorative cleaning of cultural monuments, Karcher.
Monas management chief Rini Hariyani said the Jakarta administration was planning to hire Karcher again.
