Greenpeace says only 400 Sumatran tigers remain

Noted environmental organization Greenpeace has claimed that there are only 400 Sumatran tigers left in the country as a result of massive illegal forest clearance.

“Most companies only consider the economic value of forest clearance and choose to disregard the impact on the environment,” Greenpeace’s forest campaign coordinator Rusmadya said on Thursday as quoted by Antara news wire.

He then added that the same neglect had led to the extinction of two other species; the Bali and Java Tigers. He said the Bali Tiger, the smallest in size, was last seen in a photograph in 1938.

“If people continue disturbing their habitat, where else can these animals go?” he said.

Therefore, he said, there could be no other way than to stop all illegal forest clearance activity and to create a larger habitat for these tigers before it was too late.
