200 hectares of C. Java forest lost in fires

The Central Java Forestry Agency reports that around 200 hectares of forest in the province have been destroyed by fires during this year’s dry season.
“The burned forests include those in the national parks and in lands managed by [state forestry firm] Perhutani,” agency head Sri Puryono said on Saturday in Semarang, as quoted by kompas.com.
He said that the forest fires, which happened around Lawu Mountain, Sumbing Mountain and Guci, among others, were estimated to have caused up to Rp 800 million (US$90,672) in losses.
“The financial value is relatively small but the real loss is the ecological problems caused by the fires,” Sri added.
He said human factors were among the main causes of the fires; some people carelessly discarded cigarette butts in forest areas while others did not properly extinguish campfires they had lit.
