A large number of tremors were recorded around Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait on Monday, leading authorities to warn the public against getting too close to the famous volcano, an official says.

“Data recorded at monitoring post on Oct. 3 shows that 5,800 tremors came from the volcano [that day],” an official at the Anak Krakatau volcano monitoring post in Cinangka, Anton S. Pambudi, said Tuesday as quoted by Antara state news wire.

The number of tremors on Monday had dropped slightly from a peak of more than 6,000 recorded on Sunday.

“We urge the public not to approach [Anak Krakatau] because it will be dangerous,” Anton said.

However, he said residents and fishermen around Cinangka Beach and

Anyer could continue to operate as usual. “As long as they do not come within a 2-kilometer radius of the volcano, it is still safe”.

Krakatau, also known as Krakatoa, is a group of volcanic islands in

the Sunda Strait, with the main mountain called Rakata. Krakatau erupted in 1883, killing approximately 40,000 people and setting a record for the

greatest volcanic eruption in recorded history.
