Bulog agrees to import more rice from Vietnam
State logistics firm Perum Bulog says it has inked a new deal to import 700,000 tons of rice from Vietnam, bringing the total amount of rice it has agreed to import from the country this year to 1.2 million tons.
While the 500,000 tons of rice Bulog had earlier agreed to import was expected to arrive by December, the next 700,000 tons is expected to come early next year, Bulog managing director Sutaro Alimoeso said Wednesday in Jakarta.
“Therefore, according to the contracts with Vietnam, we’re committed to importing a total of 1.2 million tons of rice, all of which is expected to arrive by January of February,” Sutarto said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
Sutarto added that Vietnam was offering 300,000 tons more rice, which could enter Indonesia between March and April.
The two countries are still discussing the possibility of increasing the rice import, but haven’t reached any agreement yet, he added.
Vietnam has had a production surplus and has made Indonesia a priority export destinations, Sutarto said.
Bulog is also mulling importing rice from India, which had a production surplus of about 2 million tons, he said.
Bulog is working to secure 1.5 million tons of rice from domestic farms, but its current stocks are enough to meet the country’s needs for the next five months.
