JAKARTA: The Indonesian Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association (PGPI) was set to hold the week long hang gliding national championships, which is also a qualification round for 2012 National Games.

About 60 athletes from 14 provinces — including Banten, Jakarta and West Nusa Tenggara — are scheduled to partake in the event, which runs from Saturday through Oct. 16 at Atang Sendjaja Indonesian Air Force runway in Parung, Bogor, West Java.

Pilots will be divided into two classes: Pilot A, who flies with a two-layer winged hang glider and pilot B, who would fly a single-wing aircraft.

The championships put four medals up for grabs, which are spot on for landing and cross-country flight for Class A and B during the event.

PGPI spokesman Tagor Siagian said that the cross-country flying event would use a measured route, which allows pilots to apply global positioning system (GPS) devices during the race.

“We will set up the route and whoever reaches the final spot first is the winner,” Tagor told The Jakarta Post on Saturday.

The organizers initially planned to challenge pilots to break a 16-year-old record in cross-country flying, which made Jakarta athlete Roy Sadewo travel 92-kilometer distance.

“We canceled the challenge because the condition’s would not allow,” said Tagor.
