Stop discrimination against teachers: PGSI

A- A A+

JAKARTA: The Indonesian Teachers Association (PGSI) has urged the government to eliminate discrimination that occurs between teachers in private and public schools, as the organization deemed that all teachers contributed to the development of Indonesia’s future generations.

PGSI coordinator Fatah Yasin said that the government still discriminated against Indonesian teachers, as evinced by the government’s disbursement of certification allowances.

This could occur due to the fact that the quota for private school teachers who received certification allowances was 25 percent, while the quota for public schools’ teachers was 75 percent.

“However, the quota for private teachers who received the certification allowance could be less than 25 percent,” Fatah said as quoted by kompas.com.

PSGI also noted that there were still private school teachers who received less compensation compared to public school teachers. Certification allowances for private school teachers, for example, reached Rp 1.5 million (US$169.5), when they could have received Rp 2 million ($226).

“Allowances for teachers at private schools with 15 to 20 years experience should be around Rp 2 million,” Fatah said.
