KPK to appeal over Mochtar acquittal

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has announced plans to file an appeal to the Supreme Court over the recent acquittal of Bekasi Mayor Mochtar Muhammad.

“We are working with our investigators and prosecutors to reassess what the panel [of judges] perceived as a weak indictment,” Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) spokesman Johan Budi SP said Wednesday as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.

Earlier judges presiding over the trial at Bandung Corruption Court said the prosecution had not presented enough evidence to support the four charges against Mochtar.

Johan, however, said he was convinced that his colleagues had enough evidence to proves that Mochtar was involved in multiple counts of graft.

“We will reexamine the witnesses and scrutinize other evidence that might suggest the weakness,” he said.

On Wednesday, the Judicial Commission also said it intended to investigate the judges and their verdict in the Mochtar case.
