The National Police says it is working to improve security ahead of the upcoming 26th SEA Games in Palembang and Jakarta.

Thousands of athletes and officials from 11 countries are expected to take part in the games, which are scheduled to take place from November 11 to 22.

In a bid to create a supportive atmosphere ahead of the games, police have organized special operations both in

the South Sumatra capital and Jakarta.

In efforts to improve general security, police in Jakarta dealt with 304 criminal cases in operations from October 1 to 9.

"We have dealt with 23 cases out of 65 we targeted," Jakarta Police operations division chief Sr Comr. Sujarno said.

He added that police had also investigated 271 criminal cases that were not targeted, under operation Sikat Jaya.

Police have promised to optimize security in the remaining 20 days of the operation, and plan to deal with another 42 target cases. According to Sujarno, during the operation police have arrested 605 suspects, 338 of whom were detained and 267 were given counseling.

Police had also confiscated a total of Rp 17 million in cash, two toy guns, an air soft gun, 57 sharp weapons, 72 motorcycles and 57 cars during the operation, to be used as evidence.

Sujarno said the target cases largely involved theft and violence, including motor vehicle theft, torture, illegal debt collecting and extortion.

Meanwhile, South Sumatra administration spokesman Sr. Comr. Sabaruddin Ginting said in Palembang recently that the police would strengthen security among efforts to make the games a success.

Securing the SEA Games locations was a priority for police

because a great number of participants, including from overseas, will attend the event.

"The biennial games should be held successfully in terms of the achievements and empowering the local economy," he said.
