Indonesia's is consistently in short supply of blood and can only produce 3.5 million blood units a year despite the demand for around 4.5 million, Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) chief Jusuf Kalla says.
The PMI has thus asked the Islamic Center Foundation to help meed this need, he said Friday.
"We will organize blood donation programs at the mosques every Friday,” he said Friday as quoted by kompas.com.
Islamic Center Foundation chairman Suko Martono said he would fully support the cause and hoped that every mosque in Bekasi could adopt a similar program in the immediate future.
Jusuf Kalla and Suko Martono have already signed a memorandum of understanding as sign of their seriousness in carrying out this program, which will be subject to evaluation every year.
