Jakarta Transportation Agency chief Udar Pristono said his agency was still studying an option to grant school holidays during the upcoming SEA Games in the capital in order to avoid traffic congestion.

“We may change the planned school holidays and have them during the SEA Games tournament so that we can avoid gridlock on the roads, which is increased by the daily movement of students,” Udar said Friday, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.

However Udar acknowledged that the proposal was still not final and was undergoing evaluation by Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo.

He said that to safeguard the smooth running of the SEA Games, for which half the events are scheduled to take place in the capital, his division is liaising with the Jakarta Police to facilitate clear passage on routes taken by athletes.

“As many as 1,171 personnel will be deployed to work alongside the police in managing traffic in order to support the athletes,” he said.
