A group of lawyers from the Constitutional Guardian Lawyers’ Forum sought clarification from House speaker Marzuki Alie over an accusation by religious figures that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono hasn’t been telling the truth during his presidential tenure.

“We want the House to conduct an examination regarding this statement. The House must indicate whether the statement is accurate in order to determine what to do next; this is a serious accusation against the President,” Petrus Selestinus, one of the lawyers, said on Friday, as quoted by kompas.com.

Petrus added that the forum would report to the Constitutional Court if the House opted to abandon the proposal.

Some months ago, a group of noted religious figures, including Ahmad Syafii Ma’arif from Muhammadiyah and Pastor Franz Magnis Suseno from the Driyarkara School of Philosophy, accused President Yudhoyono of lying about his intention to deliver welfare and justice to the people.

Through his spokesperson, the President denied the accusation, acknowledging that the government wasn’t perfect but it must have produced something useful for the people along the way
