oGYAKARTA: Yogyakarta municipality is developing solar energy to power traffic lights in an effort to reduce energy dependency on electricity, according to a government official.
“Cooperating with Gadjah Mada University and Unicom, we are experimenting on the use of solar energy for eight traffic lights,” Widarto said over the weekend.
He said, in order to be able to produce optimal energy, they would develop a wireless network in which the solar energy was stored in a panel.
“One day’s storage of solar energy can be used to power a traffic light for two days,” he said, adding that the wireless technology cost an investment of Rp 400 million (US$45,200) per traffic light.
The use of solar energy is expected to save 65 watts for one traffic light. “We will save at least 65 watts times eight every day,” he said.
