JAKARTA: Thirty-nine lawmakers are in Mecca to monitor the management of Indonesian haj pilgrims, lawmaker Ahmad Zainuddin said Tuesday.

“I am currently in Mecca. We were tasked with monitoring the haj,” Ahmad, deputy chairman of House Commission VIII overseeing religious affairs, said.

Ahmad said 39 commission members had traveled to Saudi Arabia in two groups.

A group of 18 lawmakers left for Mecca on Oct. 21 and has been slated to return on Oct. 27, while the remainder were expected to leave on Oct. 29.
